All the colts will carry 9st and the solitary filly (Gainsborough Lass) will have 8.9. . Gainsborough Lass's inclusion in the field is most interesting, as if she runs she Will be the first filly to have contested the Derby since the war substitutes. In the last of the war Derbies, run at Newmarket instead of at Epsom, two fillies, Zinovia and Tricycle, were among the field of thirteen, and they finished sixth and twelfth respectively. That was the year that Gainsborough Lass's sire, Gainsborough, was the winner, which makes the filly's acceptance Btill more intriguing. The last filly to win the Derby was Fifmella, who scored in 1916, in one of the war substitutes; the last filly to win the classic at Epsom was the grey Tagalie in 1912.'
