A long list of falls in prices marked the close of a listless day on the Stock Exchange, which was perturbed by the Spanish situation.

It was even mqre upset by the uncertainties associated with the price of gold. A vigorous intervention by the authorities alone averted a heavy break in the price of gold, as £1,700,000 worth of the metal was received from Russia and flung on to the market on May 29, and a further large quantity was offered today.
