THE ECLIPSE PARTY
ALL WELL AT CANTON ISLAND
(Received June 1, 9 a.m.)
SYDNEY, This Day.
A radio message from the solar eclipse expedition at Canton Island says:—
"All are well and becoming acclimatised. The heat and living conditions are not as severe as was anticipated. We are using wreck timber for firewood in an improvised steel stove made from a 75-foot steel mast near the pier which had been carried half a mile inland, apparently in a hurricane.
"This afternoon there was an American broadcast dedication service with a description of life on Canton Island and personal messages from the members of both parties. Sailors from both warships gathered before the memorial day monument, a concrete pyramid 4ft high near the pier. The service was conducted by Father McNally, and a prayer led by Captain Hellweg was dedicated to all men of all ships and all men of good faith who had gone before us and made our progress possible."
