MAKARA COUNTY
The balance-sheet of the Makara County Council disclosed that the county is in a sound financial position, said the retiring chairman (Mr. R. G. Mexted) in his address at the annual meeting of the County Council yesterAU riding accounts were in credit, with the exception of that for .the Makara riding, which, commenced the year with a debit balance of £471 bs lid and .closed the year with a debit balance of £300 17s 9d, having improved its position by £170 9s 2d. The proposed hospital levy for this year, said Mr. Mexted, was likely to to cause concern to the council and its ratepayers, and a considerable increase in the hospital levy this year was to be expected. ■'. ** •' . Major works that would be before the council in the ensuing year'would be another bridge in the South Takapu Road; a bridge at the Cross Roads, Ohariu; conveniences at Makara Beach; the formation of a road along the present railway line from the old station to Hinau Street, Tawa Flat; the formation of Melville and Oxford Streets to the new Tawa Flat railway station; and approximately one and a half miles of road on the OhariuMakara Road; the Black Rock Road, Newlands, required corners to be taken off and the corners banked.
Mr. Mexted retired from the chairmanship, and Councillors E. Windley and J. Purchase were nominated for the position, Councillor Windley being elected by 5 votes to 3.
