CALEDONIAN SOCIETY

CHANGE TO STUART TARTAN

The question whether it should change its tartan from that of the Clan Cameron to that of the Royal Stuart was discussed at the annual meeting of. the Wellington Caledonian Society last evening.

Pipe-Major C. Stewart said that the society's band had used the Cameron tartan for many years, but as it was dark.it appeared a little drab alongside brighter tartans. The Royal Stuart tartan was, on account of its brightness, better for ceremonial purposes and the band unanimously wished to change to it. ■ . Mr. M. Gray Nasmith said that it would be appropriate, and a loyal move of the society towards • their Scottish Queen, who wore the Royal Stuart tartan, to change in the Coronation year. .

Mr. A. Kettles said that 'as the society had commenced' with the Cameron tartan and had used it for ap. number of years, it should be retained. Although the Stuart tartan had a famous history, the Cameron tartan had one also, he said, and the dark tartan would wear better. . He thought the band would never wear a better tartan.

Mr. E. Stewart said that when the band was at the" pipe'bands contest in Wanganui it had felt at a disadvantage with other bands which wore lighter tartans. * ■

It was decided to change the tartan of the society to the Royal Stuart;

After discussion it was decided to increase the number of chieftains from five to twelve with one chief, a/id that the number of directors be reduced from twenty to twelve.
