THE YEAR'S WORK

The annual meeting of the Polynesian society was neld in the Turnbull Library last night, the president, tne Rt. Key. :H. W. Williams, Bishop, oi Vvaiapu, presiding;

The I'n'emperstup of the society at March 31 was staled in the report to be as follows, the figures tor tne previous jyear being given in parentheses; —Honorary 8 (.b), corresponding a-l:9j, life 32 (29), ordinary 280 1275;. Four members died. Twenty-two ordinary and one life member were elected, while two ordinary members qualified for life membership, and in ' addition half a dozen nominations were received after the close of the year, but were not'included in :the above figures.

Amongst the deaths referred to was that of Sir Frederick Chapman, one of the few foundation member:. "He was an anthropologist qf acumen<" said the report, "his notable contribution in this scene being his classic paper on the working of greenstone, published in 1891, the year before the Polynesian Society was founded. ... It has-never been superseded." The number of papers read in the anthropological section at the Auckland conference of the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science showed the interest now being taken in this acknowledged science. They were a- substantial contribution to the ethnology of the Pacific. ■■■-■'

The report dealt with the representation of the society at. various conferences held during the year. Appreciative references were made to the Harry Beasley and W. O. Oldham notes and illustrations on Maori artifacts, and to their assistance in having these reproduced in the journal. The follow.ing officers were elected; —Patron, the Governor-General, Viscount Galway;'president, Bishop Williams; editor of the journal, Mr. Johannes C. Andersen; honorary secretary, Mr. A. H. Maciver; 'honorarytreasurer, Mr. D. Foster; honorary auditor, Mr. H. Baillie.
