NO STATE AID
MATCH WITH SPRINGBOKS
UNIVERSITY PROPOSAL
The appeal to the Hon. W. E. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, to use his influence with a view> to arranging a fixture for the New Zealand University team with the Springboks is not likely to succeed. For one thing the programme of matches for the South XJrican Rugby representatives has been decided upon, and for another the Minister does not wish to interfere with the arrangements , made by. the controlling bodies of Rugby in South Africa and New Zealand. It had been put to the Minister that at a meeting of footballers representing the New Zealand University Colleges a motion (proposed by H. G. Munrp - and seconded by Professor Andrew) was. carried unanimously, to the effect that the Minister's aid.be sought in the direction indicated. - In; notifying the New Zealand Rugby Union of the receipt of the request, the' Under-Secretary of Internal Affairs (Mr. J. W. Heenan) advised that the Minister had sent the following "Telegram received urging on behalf meeting footballers representing New Zealand .University ...Colleges, that efforts be made ;/ by department Internal Affairs to arrange fixture for New Zealand University team against. Springboks. Tour of Springboks arranged entirely between New Zealand and South African Rugby Unions, and it does not seem to me that a. State Department could very well intercede in the way suggested." The Minister, who was out of Wellington, added that; he had telegraphed to the Department in Wellington, which no;.doubt would. pass on the messaged to'.. : ,the. Rugby Union for consideration.■.;. ,-.y '■ ■ No action was taken at last nights meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union's executive, _ other ;: than to Vreceive" the communication.
