JUTE SITUATION IMPROVES

Bird and Co., Calcutta, writing by air mail under date Calcutta, May 11, to Wellington clients, reported "that "the strike situation at the various jutemills took on a much improved complexion over last weekend, and with the labour leaders recommending the strikers to return to work, Monday morning saw an almost general resumption. Today normal conditions are reported all round, and we are hoping that we have seen the last of strikes for some considerable time. We estimate roughly that the stoppage has resulted in a loss oT production of about 120,000,000 yards of hessian and--45,000,000 bags. Speculative buying in the futka market,on Monday brought higher prices in the near positions, but with one or two mill sellers keen for forward business prices for these later deliveries remained unchanged. Today the tone is quiet, and as we write prices are slightly easier."
