PRICES SATISFACTORY

DECREASE IN SHIPMENTS

The Fruit' Board reports that shipments of apples and pears this season show a substantial decrease on those of last season. The total distribution for export amounted to 898,533. cases of apples and 42,192 cases of pears, and the ■ fruit was shipped to a . wide, range of countries.' Shipments of- apples to the United Kingdom were as follows:—London, 398,262 and 28,879 cases pears; Southampton, 36,973 and 366 cases pears;. Avonmouth, 9678 cases apples; Glasgow, 28,809; Manchester, 27,739; Liverpool, 33.973. The above totals 750.823 cases of apples and 35,965 cases . of pears, . . . In addition1 to these shipments Otago contributed 100 cases of apples to Calcutta, 22,098 to Liverpool, and 124,912 .and 6227 cases of pears to London: EXCELLENT QUALITY. The Fruit Board has been notified, from London that. the.condition of ,the fruit ,on arrival .was good, with high colour and of excellent quality, and the London manager reports that the fruit has -turned out better than- he has seen for many years. The High Commissioner's cabled information shows that the average prices were most ■ satisfactory, and, judging from .the market reports, taken in conjunction with reports of the mar- ■ kets on arrival, it looks as if the average price for the season will be at least equal to the Government guarantee.

!i This year's guarantee will give the grower compensation for production as was originally intended. An average return of 10s 6d (New-Zealand currency) per case c.i.f. New Zealand should mean .a return to the grower to cover, cost' of. production and-packing 5s 3d per case, free on board or free on rail. ' ' ' "
