LEVEL CROSSINGS
NORTH ROAD MADE SAFER
The elimination of level crossings is being energetically tackled by the Public Works Department, and works that will make motoring safer between Wellington and Palmerston North are already under way or in course of preparation. A contract of approximately £11,200 for the construction of a ramp of three spans on pile foundations, to give a 24-foot roadway and a four-foot footway, has been let to Mr. A. P. Pulley, who is also the contractor for a ramp at Otaki. Another dangerous spot will vanish with the construction of the ramp at Porirua, where the contract has been'let to the Downer Construction Co. Plans have been prepared for a 300 ft ramp at Manakau, which will give a 24ft roadway, but no footway, .' . .
The time saved by these ramps at spots where bad visibility formerly caused motorists to slow up will be considerable. This raises an interesting, point, that at spots like that where the Paraparaumu ramp is being placed, where there are three practically right-angled turns, and poor visibility, there have been fewer accidents than where there were long level stretches approaching the railway crossings. The turns compel drivers to slow up, besides making them "stop, look, and listen."
