ATLANTIC VOYAGE
YACHT REACHES NEWPORT NEWPORT, May 25. The English challenger for the America's Cup, the Endeavour, arrived towed by the Viva, which relieved the coastguard cutter 20 miles out. The Endeavour. was escorted by the yacht Yankee and the schooner Atlantic. Captain Ned Heard said that the crew of 19 was none the worse for the experience. He revealed that the towline was purposely dropped at the height, of the storm to make the going easier in the heavy sea. The Viva's crew was unaware of this.. The Endeavour was becalmed for three days, but h,ad no difficulty after that. The Endeavour broke her. towline on May X 4 in the Atlantic, and was believed to be slowly en route to Newport alone under a jury-rig sail. This was revealed when her convoy, the Viva 11, arrived at Newport after a vain 40-hour search for the yacht.
