PROF. PICCARD'S BALLOON BRUSSELS, May 25. After hot-air burners had nine-tenths inflated Professor Piccard's balloon in order to enable him to ascend to the stratosphere from Zellick, it took fire and was completely destroyed. , Professor Piccard made a stratosphere ascent from Detroit in October, 1934 and estimated that his balloon rose'to a height of 10 miles. In August, 1932, he rose about 10J miles in a flight from Dubendorf Aerodrome, near Zurich, and. in May, 1931, starting from Augsburg, he ascended 93 miles.
