TAXI PROBLEMS

(To the Editor.) Sir,—Towards the close of last year a committee of inquiry sat on the question of taxi control: After many weeks we were given a resume of its deliberations. Since then ,all we have heard is that the Minister of Transport does mot intend to give full sanction to all their findings and that legislation is necessary to carry out some of their recommendations. Also;; we were told he had circularised-the city council regarding control. Whilst all this goes on taxi-drivers are still.paid on commissipn and work all the hours. In certain industries the employers are even told they have to do as they are "told, whereas the taxi-driver . has still to work' from 90 to 100 hours per week in all weathers, and,if he is married is perhaps allowed, to see his, family or use his home merely as a placeto snatch- a few hours' sleep. :; Every other industry has had to do as it is told, so wriy should: not /the taxi industry be put in order, at least to'give the men who drive the cars a chance to a decent day's'wprk? Hoping this will bring some word of hope for us-all-lam, etc.,; _y, ; ,
