ADVANCE TO BILBAO
United Press , Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyrisht ■ (Received May 24, 2.10 p.m.) LONDON, May 23. The refugee Basque children wh» landed at Southampton wer#trangport» ed to camp at North -Stoneham i« special vans. f Many of them have been so/ long accustomed to starvation that they werevreluctant to part with crusts bt bread which they had in their pockets, and other habits' acquired during the war have so gripped them that they duck when clicking newsreel cameras, reminiscent of machine-guns, are-pre-sented in their direction. "* '■ '• Upon their arrival in camp, tha children examined the tents, tried tha mattresses, and hugged themselves into the blankets. They clustered in tha field kitchens as a preliminary to consuming their first English meal. 'Oh, yes, I have seen people killed." gravely said a 13-year-old. "Once I saw 60 dead after an air raid." This is an example of many similar stories, some of which recall the horrors of the retreat from Guernica.' . Meanwhile the latest loyalist messages from Spain announce the rebel bombing of the open towns of Pamplona and Vallodolid, resulting in th« deaths of many women and children. The correspondent of "The Times" at Bilbao says that four companies of rebels, supported by 96 aeroplanes, advanced further towards Bilbao after hitter fighting at the weekend, sustaining losses which necessitated their-re-inforcement by two companies.
