WELLINGTON CENTRE

OPENING OF SEASON

Over fifty riders took part in the first races of the season held by the Wellington Amateur Cycling Centre on Saturday afternoon from the Central Fire Station. The season was officially opened by Mr. A. R. Thomas, president of the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association, who was introduced by Mr. H. S. Abel, president ofthe Wellington centre. I Mr. Thomas read a telegram from the. Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry), in which the Minister apologised for his absence and wished those engaged in the sport a successful season. There were 'now about 1000 registered cyclists in New Zealand, said Mr. Thomas, who predicted a greater advance being made by the sport. He referred to the presence of junior riders and new members, and to the British Empire Games, to be held in Sydney in February next. The cyclists who represented New Zealand at the games, he said, would do so as the result of hard training, good living, and trying their best. Mr. Thomas also paid tribute to the officials and other supporters of the sport. The following medals won at the Wellington championships were presented by Mr. Thomas:—G. Amey, 1000 metres track championship; R. Loader, 1000 metres sprint, and dead heat in time trial; Len Sowerby, dead heat in time trial; T. Walsh, junior championship. There were 36 starters for the 23 miles senior race, and 17 starters for the junior race. Results are as follows:— Senior Race.—P. Johnston (Port Nicholson), Gmin, 56min 6sec, 1; W. Sinclair (Poneke), 3min, 53min 6sec, 2; R L Williams (Poneke), smin, 55rmn 6 3-ssec, 3. Fastest times: R. Ulmer (Poneke). scr, 53min, 1; C. Biggs (Hutt Valley), scr, 53min l-ssec. 2; W. Sinclair (Poneke), 3min. 53min Osec. 3. Junior Race—W. Goey (Poneke), 2imin, 1; A. F. Jackson (Poneke), 3min, 2; G. Stone (Poneke), 2Jmin, 3. Fastest times: I. Cowan (Poneke), lmin, 20min lOsec. 1; T. Walsh (Poneke), lmin 2; H. Kent (Poneke), scr, 20mm 31sec, 3. PROFESSIONAL RACE. Twelve riders competed in the first professional road cycling race of the 1937 season, held at Petone on Saturday afternoon over a distance of approximately 15 miles. Conditions were ideal for racing. , The placings were:—l. Caulton (2min), 47min 30 3-ssec, 1; W. Hogg (2min), 47min 31 l-ssec, 2; P. Doherty (4min), 3. I. Caulton also gained fastest time. MASTERTON CLUB. A 30-miles' race was held by the Masterton Club. The results were: P. Condon (scr), 1; C. Dykes (scr), 2. Fastest time: P. Condon, lhr 37min 6 3-sscc.
