JOHNSONVILLE LUCKY
Athletic, on the run of play, were unlucky in not securing a win over Johnsonville, who, though maintaining their unbeaten record, were very hard pressed. From the start Athletic set up a solid defence* and their tackling and spoiling play completely upset the Johnsonville attack. The Athletic forwards secured a preponderance of the ball, and hooking cleanly, they gave Littler, at half, every opportunity. In addition, the defence of several of the Johnsonville backs left much to be desired, and the Athletic back-line repeatedly broke through. The score at half-time was 6-all, and then, when the Burns brothers, at fiveeighths for Johnsonville, scored eight more points between them, it looked as though Johnsonville were getting control of the game, but for the greater part of the second spell Athletic were in charge, and added a try (converted) to their score. J. Burns kicked two penalties and converted one try for Johnsonville, Smith doing likewise for Athletic. The scorers of tries were: J. Hallewell and G. Burns (Johnsonville) and G. Stott (Athletic). The final score was: Johnsonville 14, Athletic 11. The referee was Mr. J. N. Kitchen.
