Conferences to settle the strike at the Oshawa plant of the General Motors Corporation of Canada collapsed. . . .'■... ■.' . The Premier of Ontario (Mr. Mitchell Hepburn) refused.to deal with a delegation including Mr. Thompson, of the Automobile Workers' Union of America, or "any other paid foreign agitator of the Committee for Industrial Organisation." The president of the Automobile ■ Workers' Union (Mr. Homer Martin) then arrived/for consultations.- Mr. Hepburn declared that he similarly was unacceptable, and insisted that the General Motors Corporation had made concessions which would assure a settlement of the strike "except for John L>. It is reported that the General Motors Corporation is prepared to recognise the Automobile Workers' Union, but not as an affiliate of the • Committee for Industrial Prganisation. , '~ ■■~■'-■."■■
A message from Montreal states that the General .Motors.- Corporation^, at Oshawa has decided to resume partial operations on Monday.' Mr." Hepburn reiterated that he would afford .protection, , but said he was hopeful, of; a settlement. . .'; .. . '
Leaders, of the Committee for Indus^ trial .Organisation corldemn Mr. Hepburn's partiality and- say his 'utterances are provocative and that the responsibility for anything.wh^ch.happens will: rest with him. , MR. FORD OBJECTS TO UNIONS. Mr. Henry -Ford, president. of the Ford, Motor Company, has issued; a further statement.' Labour unions, he says, are "the worst things that ever struck this, earth.", jHe promised .that the company soon would demonstrate wages,: .production,' and: competition such as had never, been seen before.
