MR.ALGERNON ASHTON

(Received April 12, 1.10 p.m.) LONDON, April 11. The death of Mr. Algernon Ashton, the composer, is reported.

Mr. Algernon Bennet. Langton Ashton was born in 1859, and educated at Leipzig, where, he lived for seveuteen years. : He then went to: Frankfort to continue his musical education, and in 1885 was appointed professor bl the pianoforte at the: Royal College of Music, holding that post -until 1910. He went to, the London College of Music in 1913, and since 1918 had been on the Board of .Examiners. He; composed about : 170 works, including eighteen sonatas for various instruments, three trios, two- quartets, and two quintets. His principal recreation was writing letters to the newspapers, almost 3000 having appeared. He gathered several hundreds of these together to : make such books as his "Truth,: Wit, and Wisdom" (1905)' and "More Truth, Wit, and Wisdom" (1908). .--. ■ ■■
