SQUADRON CAMP
LEGION OF FRONTIERSMEN
During, the . Easier : Holidays "N" (Manawatu) Squadron of the Legion of Frontiersmen held their tenth annual camp,at Ngaputahi, a delightful spot on the banks of the Pohangina River, some 18 miles, above Ashhurst. The attendance, at the camp totalled 46; in addition to members of "N"' Squadron there were;.ten men. from "K"'Squad-ron-I XMastertpn) and other: Frontiersmen; frpm Taranaki, Marton, Wellington,: and Nelson. .•.-:■-.. ;- j' ". Commandant ■j;- C. • Findlater, Ha'wera, commandant of the legion for New Zealand, Twas in command, and the camp staff consisted of Captain J. E...H. Mewett, 0.8.E.,..M.C. (squadron commander), Captain P. A. Warren, Lieutenant J. L.. C. Merton, M.C., T.D. (adjutant), Lieutenants S. E. Gilshnan, M.M., and F. Clark, and Q.M.S.s W. R. Taylor (N Squadron) and W. D. Ansell (X Squadron). The catering arrangements '.were in the hands of Pioneer A. T; Whitehead. .-,/ ' ' ' : ' . ,- ■
| ■•■' The weather- was, for the most part, allthat could be desired, and gave every opportunity for carrying out the. annual musketry course on the rifle range adjoining the camp.; The prizewinners were as follows:—First day's aggregate (Fm. Kenny's trophy), Fm. L. Homer; second day, handicap shoot aggregate1 (Pioneer Whitehead's Cup), Fm.J.Rowbotham; 200yds,,Sgt. A. W. Jensen; 300 yds, Cpl. Wallis; 500 yds, Fm. L. E. M. Matthews: The.scores will count.'for the. trophies competed for annually, by the varipus squadrons throughout New -Zealand, and will be handed, in af the annual conference of the New Zealand Command to be held in Christchurch'in.May. . On Sunday afternoon-the: squadron chaplain, Rev^ H. B. .Goertz, of Ashhiirst, conducted a parade service at the icamp. ;: This was!: attended by a number of friends ■of the, squadron as well as many of the residents: in the Pohangina Valley and several camping, parties in the Totara Reserve, which is situated on the opposite bank ot the river, including a party of leaders from the .Y.M.C.A.,.Palmerston North. The attendance was well over 100, and the visitors were ' afterwards entertained by the squadron at afternoon 6ln addition to musketry, the time was devoted to drill and general training, and the evenings to lectures and social- gatherings round the camp tire where reminiscences of. service in ,all parts of the'yorld from Zeebrugge to the AntarctiK continent-and of most walks •of/life/on; land;.and sea were i "swapped.-"■■£■;■;■ ;>.:.'■: '.-■'. \'-'- '•■ '■' 3
