ALL-ROUND INCREASE
All-rpund, increases in the- J rentals charged croquet and bowling clubs,, and also m the charges for football grounds and cricket pitches, were approved by the Auckland City Council on Thursday, states the "New Zealand Ilerald." The new scale willbe adopted,as from April 15, and in the case of the rentals for the use of. reserves by croquet, bowling, and tennis clubs, the new charges will operate from the date of expiry of the present tenancies. The superintendent of parks stated that the charges for hiring football grounds and cricket pitches were reduced vsome years ago on account of the depression. Increased wages and shorter hours had added to the cost of maintenance of .all types of sports grounds. "Briefly, the' charges • operating for the various sports are less today than a quarter of a century ago, when the cost of labour and materials was 90 per cent, lower," he added. He was therefore of the opinion that an allround increase was justified. Details of the proposed increases were shown in a schedule, which was approved by the council. The Hon. B. Martin, M.L.C., asked that a report showing the annual cost of maintenance of sports grounds, and the revenue received, be made available.
