RUGBY LEAGUE

HARD GROUND DETERS PRACTICE

The St. George and Central Rugby League Clubs staged a practice match at the Lyall Bay Reserve on Saturday, but the extremely hard condition of the ground was against serious football. Under the circumstances, the more experienced players wisely refrained from runing into a .tackle. The workout, however, indicated that again ,thi3 season St. George will have a good all-round side and a fast back-line. T. Timmins has shifted from axentre.position to the right -wing, and by tha manner in which he raced over the line for four tries, demonstrated'that'he is in excellent iormi. '■; In scoring one try, a fine solo effort from his own twentyrive,. Timmins showed'a nice "change of pace and ability to exploit successfully the half-turn to breaK through a tackle.' . Clive Mulhollarid who previously played full-back for the Miramar Union Club, will play in one of the centre positions^ he ,nas made a % big .impression on St. George officials^ Ivan Wilson had his 'firstgame: since undergoing an operation for" a knee-injury. Wilson said after the game -that he felt nov effect on the knee, and ; had taken the opportunity to give it a real test. R. Noisley was on the side-line, and A. Carrol, a hooker from the Ponsonby Club, of Auckland; tooK hi* place. Carrol strikes for the ball very quickly, and has the benefit, of experience. A. O'Connor, W. Spencer,, and K. Mailman also figured prominently, and J. Cootes seemed attached to; the ball or never far away from it. Central will be a better.side than was the case last yead L.Messinger, • a break-away forward from; the West Coast, had his first run for Central, but unfortunately twisted an ankle early in the game. J. Wright, will obtain a good share of the ball, and in Worsley, McLaughlin, and Johnson he should have good support. Cyril Berry did not appear on Saturday; but it is hoped he will be on hand to lead the forwards: Berry is one of the putstanding forwards playing the game ia Wellington. It is also stated that A. Broadhead, the Richmond Rovers and Auckland second-row forward, \ will play for Central when he arrives in Wellington.v The back-line is under reconstruction, but iij. Bramble, L. Merson, A. Jamieson, M. Atkins, and L. Coombes will agahv.be on hand. The clubs will have, final training at Lyell Bay next Saturday ■when" the selection "of teams will be. finalised. : ~■ •■■;.'
