HIGHER COST OF ROADS

GREATER REVENUE REQUIRED

"There is : ample : evidence ■:■ that greater revenue is' .required this year to maintain "the roads and bridges throughout the county, as' the ,revenue available last year in most ridings has not been sufficient for both purposes," said Mr. H. C. Hemphill, county clerk, at a meeting- of the Whangarei County Council on Friday, reports ' the "New Zealand Herald." '•.','

"In 1929 the: total. European generaL rate levied" was £27.650. compared with £16,109 last financial .year," said Mr. Hemphill, "while the county's ■ contri-. bution towards the maintenance of highways was £5888 in 1929 and £4097 for the year just closed. Traffic over the roads, has doubled in the past ten years, while expenditure on maintenance has decreased. The advance in costs last year .was approximately 38 per cent./or £7000. The State has taken over 62 miles of highway, but even then the cost on all roads will, be greater than .before. It. will not be possible, in my opinion, to continue without increased revenue!if the roads and. bridges are „to be .kept : up. The rate of expenditure will require constant and careful supervision, otherwise finances may get out of hand.'. The total estimated expenditure during'the ■present, year is £25,845." • •„ '; .
