RED CROSS SOCIETY PARTY

Mrs. J. Mitchell entertained members and friends of the Lower Hutt branch of the Red Cross Society at her home, "Gasa'• Loma," .Lower Hutt. Those present included Major Abel (chairman of the Dominion Executive

of the ReJ Cross Society), Captain Galloway (secretary of the New Zealand Red Cross Society), Mrs. I. L. Andrews . (Dominion ; secretary), and members from the Wellington Centre, the Mayor and. Mayoress of Lower Hutt (Mr. and Mrs. J. .W. Andrews), Councillor C. J. Ashton and Mrs. Ashton, and representatives from the various Lower Hutt churches.

During the-./. evening, -.elocutionary itenls were given by Mrs. H. M. Lowe and the Rev.-H. T. Peat, and vocal duefs by. Mesdames .' J. Schmidt. and D. Look.' Mrs. J:,W.,.Andrews ..was accompanist. .The-hostess provided, a dainty supper, and was cordially thanked:, for: her: hospitality. -,■-.';.-.>■ •

Garden Circle.

Having commenced their winter evening meetings the Horticultural Society's Garden Circle had a large attendance, of, members 'at the first of the series which was held'in the society's hall at Lower Hutt,

There were two speakers, Mr. W. Smith 'and Miss C. Fraser. Mr. Smith spoke upon lawns, dealing with .the sowing ,of; new ones and'the preservation of old. He, stressed the necessity for the thorough , preparation of .the soil before sowing, and the. best .type i f grass for Hutt Valley lawns. Some helpful.advice on the renewing.of old lawns was -given, .and on fertilisers productive of the . best results. . Mr. Smith ; alsp advised upon" the eradication of daisies, and' both he and Miss Fraser., answered many questions relating to their respective subjects. . Miss. Fraser gave a very, helpful lecture upon the cultivation" of sweet peas j •for home decoration and for show purposes., She commenced with the selection of varieties and the planting of the ,seed In boxes, and continued with thel trenching of the ground, the fertilisers used to bring the colours out, and the transplanting of .the seedlings. Miss Fraser -explained her method of working with a chart to grade the quality of the different pecs. Both lecturers were warmly thanked for the thorough handling of their subjects.
