PETITION TO PARLIAMENT

Opposition .-to., the recommendation of the Commissioner,: Mr. W. H. Freeman, = s'lM.^ appointed by- the - : Minister of Health-to conduct an inquiry into the question of the amalgamation of the Southland and Wallace. hospital districts, that they' be reconstituted to form one hospital district, was expressed by a public -meeting held at Rivevton. The main" speaker was the Hon. Adam Hamilton, Leader of the Opposition, , who discussed centralisation ;,iii some, detail, and emphasised'that; two points which could"have justified amalgamation, saving .-in- 'administration costs and justifiable criticism of treatment of patients in the"Wallace. Hospital, had both been^deflnitely.';rejected by the Commissioner. vHe and-other speakers contended that., the recommendation was against the weight of evidence and ..that such a question' should, not be dealt with arbitrarily, but should rest on a decision; of:ratepayers and residents of the district.
