MEDICINE STAMP DUTIES . IN BRITAIN

The report of a select committee of the House of Commons puts forward proposals for certain reforms of the law relating to medicine stamp duties.
A, recommendation is included for the imposition of Id duty on every 6d worth of remedial , cosmetics sold in Britain .under tlie medicine stamp duties regulatigns. The committee adds that if there is difficulty in deciding which cosmetics are remedial, the Government should consider taxing all cosmetics. At the rate suggested it is estimated that the tax would yield more than £350,000.
In the opinion of the committee the existing duties are too heavy on lowerpriced medicines, and it recommends id stamp duty on a 3d article and Id duty on 6d or■ part of 6d. Besides applying to medicines, the duty should, it says, be levied on all foods, soaps, tooth pastes, and preparations which are advertised as having medicinal qualities.
