It" was announced in Berlin today that Herr yon Ribbentrop, who has acted as Herr Hitler's special diplomatic emissary on a number of occasions, has been appointed German Ambassador in London to succeed th« late Herr yon Hoesch, who died here in April. Press messages from . Berlin state that the appointment is regarded there as indicating the importance • which Herr Hitler attaches to the maintenance of good ... relations with Great Britain, the new Ambassador being one of his closest advisers on foreign political questions. Herr yon Ribbentrop, who is already well known in London, is 43 years, of age. < Herr yon Ribbentrop is a native of Wesel, on the Rhine, and the son of a former army officer. He studied in Metz, Switzerland, France, and England. In 1914 he was in Canada, but he returned home on the beginning of conflict and held a commission in the Twelfth Hussars. In 1920 he left the army to enter business. He was never active in politics in early post-war years and did not enter the Reichstag until fairly recently. Before the Nazis came to power he was entrusted with, important negotiations.for them. He was the intermediary between Herr Hitler and Herr yon Papen. In 1935 he became recognised as the Fuhrer's Ambassador at,large. He led the German delegation in the negotiation ( of the Naval Agreement of last year I with Britain, a notable Nazi success in foreign affairs. He was also thai German representative at London duoling the post-Rhineland discussions.
