GREAT AUDIENCE
ORCHESTRAL TRIUMPH
II was a grand thing to see the Town Hall as it was last night, when Dr. Malcolm Sargent conducted the Wellington Symphony Orchestra concert, crowded for once to the doors with a music-eager and enthusiastic audience. One could not help reflecting rather sadly on the fact that nothing less than a visiting celebrity would have drawn such a crowd of Wellington people to listen for two hours to orchestral music. Could it be that the standard .here is so high that none less than the very best among those whose names have been made abroad can satisfy?
Being a' comparatively warm might, the audience also presented—for once —quite a smart and, what must have been to the musicians, an inspiring appearance. Gleaming shirt fronts and black ties predominated among the men, and the womenfolk were their equals in correct, though, of course, more resplendent, concert attire. Short white fur coats were popular, but there were also many handsome brocade and velvet wraps.
