RISKING A "TAG"
FOXTON HARBOUR RATE
(Special to the "Evening Post.") PALMERSTON N., This Day. Arising from the Foxton Harbour' Board's decision to strike a rate for the purpose of meeting interest and sinking fund payments on its loans and requiring local bodies to levy and collect the rate, the audit inspector at Palmerston North advised the Kairanga County Council yesterday that there was no authority for a local body,' in lieu of collecting such rate, to pay the amount out of the general account. , The county, clerk reported .that the rate would amount to less than one penny in a number of cases, making the cost of collection ridiculous. There would be a lot of work and the expense would be out of all proportion \ to the amount the county was required to raise as its share, namely, £101. - ' The council decided .to risk a "tag" on its balance-sheet. ;
