Whitehall has discovered that women in the higher classes of the Civil Service prefer their jobs to marriage (states the London "Daily Mail"). It is revealed that in the administrative class —the highest—for which women became eligible in 1925—n0t one woman has yet decided to sacrifice her career for marriage.
The annual marriage rate—or "marriage wastage" as it is officially called —is remarkably low in the other classes, as the following figures, taken over a period of four years, indicate:— Marriage ... Class. Percentage. Minor and-manipuiative .. 5 • Typing ...;..... 3.4'Subordinate supervising . arid technical 3.2 . Writing assistants 2.9 • Clerical 2.5 Inspectorate 1.4 .Executive. 1 The telephone girl, with the attraction of her golden voice, is included in the "minor and manipulative" class,, and her marriage rate is the highest of all. A telephone girl may get as much as £150 as a "dowry" on retiring to marry. The "dowry estimates" in the telephone service for 1936 amounted to £161,500. Generally speaking, the more the salary the lower is the marriage rate. In Whitehall all women who marry are compelled to retire, but a widow with children is not barred from securing a post
