kindergarten birthday

The Moera free kindergarten celebrated its eighth birthday recently in the Community Hall, Moera.. After morning school Miss Edythe Adams, the kindergarten mistress, assisted by Miss Creagh and Miss Middleton, organised a surprise party for the children. The hall was decorated, tables prepared, and a large birthday cake, complete with eight candles supplemented the usual rusks and apples. The Mothers' Club celebrated the event with a social afternoon. A second, beautiful cake was supplied, and a posy was laid beneath the photograph of the founder of the kindergarten, the late Miss N. B. Riley. The club's president, Mrs. Baldwin, was in the chair, and Mrs. Cook was accompanist for the musical items. Among the many mothers present were Mesdames Murray (vice-president), Burns, Pointon, Dixon, McEwen, Stevens, Campbell, Cook, Keene, Wilkinson, Dunnett, and Wensor. Children's Function. The Lower Hutt Plunket Society's -funds benefited from a delightful afternoon fancy-dress ' party organised for the children by Mrs. S. Mitchell. The function was held in the Horticultural Hall, with a very nice tea provided for visitors and, children in the supperrooms. Assisting Mrs. Mitchell were Mesdames Grant, Buckland, Heddish, Monigatti, and Halcombe, and Miss J. Routley, who aided with a produce stall and with the afternoon-tea arrangements. Mrs. Binning and Mr. and Mrs. Gearing judged the children's costumes. The music for the games and folk dances was provided by Mr. and George. Mrs. Mitchell wishes to thank all those who contributed in material and in personal assistance towards the success of the afternoon.. The prize-winning costumes were worn by Ruth Elliott-Currie (Mac West), Hay Grant (Rooster), Colin Swift (John Bull), Joan McGhie and Robert Budge (Madame Pompadour and. Courtier)., A special- prize was donated to little Barbara Bartley (Victorian Lady). Other striking costumes were Joyce Tolley (Fairy Queen), Beatrice Barkle (Old English Gentleman), Desmond Barkle (Negro), Pauline Fen wick (Rose), Patricia Osborne (Keep off -the Grass), Peter Osborne (Dutch Boy), June Forbes (Gipsy), Lois Armstrong (Spring), Pat Monigatti (Herald), Peter Elliott-Currie (Drum-mer-Boy), and Hazel Swift; (Milkmaid). The visitors included Mesdames Hartshorne, Bowater, Butland, Budge, Maitland (senior), Root,' Morris, Fletcher, McGhie, Swift, and Misses Kenny and J. Elliott-Currie. Posies were presented to Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. Binning. '..•■. P. and T. Social Evening. The annual social evening, supper, and dance of the Hutt Valley sub-sec-tion of the P. and T. Department was held in Miss Draper's studio at Lower Hutt. The first part of the evening was taken up by supper and speeches, Mrs. P. Dowse contributing the only ladies' speech on the programme, which included musical items and exhibitions of dancing. Those present included the Hon. and Mrs. W. Nash (the latter in black marocain), the Mayor (Mr. J. W. Andrews), Mr. Parnell, Mr. G. McNamara, Mr. and Mrs. Cummins (black velvet), Mr. and Mrs. Palmer (floral georgette), Mr. and Mrs. MacKenzie (black lace), Mr. and Mrs. Boyes (black matalasse),- Mr. and Mrs. B. Peglar (rose sand-crepe), Mr.. Robertson, Mr. Sloane, Mr. Brown, Mr. and Mrs. P. Dowse (black matalasse), Mr. and Mrs. Frost (violet crepe de chine), Mr. and Mrs. King (floral crepe), Mr. and Mrs. Hislop (brown taffetas), Mr. and Mrs. Freeman (floral taffetas), Mr. arid Mrs. Henderson, Mr. and Mrs. Middlemiss. Mr. and Mrs. Melrose (floral silk), Mr. and Mrs. B. Seddon (black satin), Mr. and Mrs. R. Reid (brown floral georgette); Mr. and Mrs. Mackey (crimson lace), Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Beattie (floral georgette), Mr. and Mrs. Stevens (floral crepe), Mr. and Mrs. Johns (blue, lace), Mr. and Mrs. Stagg (tomato suede), Mr. and Mrs. Walsh (metal-striped georgette), Misses E. Draper (Marina marocain), D. Wale (vieux rose crepe), Adshead (beige lace), and Messrs. N. Walsh and G. Persson. Moera Mothers' Club. The Community Hall at Moera and its surrounding lawns were the scene of a carnival instituted by the Moera Mothers' Club in aid of the Free Kindergarten funds. The Mayor of, Lower Hutt introduced the member for the district, the Hon. Walter Nash, who, in a short address, declared the carnival open, and assured the Kindergarten committee of every support he and the Minister of Education' could supply. Miss Edythe Adams, kindergarten mistress, presented posies, to Mrs. Nash and to Mrs. G. R. Millward, who later judged the fancy costumes of the children. Despite the very cold wind, sideshows and produce stalls did a brisk trade, while the young folk were entertained with donkey rides and the antics of two clowns. Band music -introduced the carnival spirit, and afternoon tea was provided for the visitors inside the hall.

The carnival's organiser was Mr. I. Johnson, assisted by Mr. Burns, the secretary of the committee. Those helping were Mesdames Baldwin, Murray, Stevens, Burns, Kayes, Keene, Rasmussan, Baxter, Dixon, Purvis, Pointon, Ralph, Jamieson, Jones, and Pierce, and the Misses Campbell, T. and E. Stevens, M. Pincock, MVCaider, a. Pincock, and E. Pierce. Visitors included Mesdames Wyatt, Brian, Dawson, Lepper, Levy, and Miss Fitzgerald.

Prize-winners in the fancy costumes competition were Eileen Wyatt (Lavender Lady), Norma Brian (Little Miss Muffet), Joyce Dawson (Spring), Beryl Lepper (Paddy O'Day), Colin Wyatt (Popeye the Sailor), Jim Larney (RedIndian), Graham Wyatt (Cupid), Les'mond Lownden, and Cyril McEwen. The "Lucky Baby" competition was won by Baby Garrood.
