OLYMPIC CLUB
The Olympic Club's anual teams race for the Philp Shield was held over a three-mile course at Miramar. Starting from the tennis courts the trail led up past the tram terminus and up the new road, circling round the'hills with a climb to the top. It then .dropped down on to the road, which was followed past the gasworks, the trail next doubling back round the' football grounds and back to the finish. Four teams of four took part in the race. The pace was easy atthe start, numerous changes taking part in the earlier stages of the race. The captains of the four teams were keeping well back to try to brinf their men through as much as possible.
However, by the time the runners were coming off the hill E. Lovatt had moved up to the front place, followed closely by R. Garnham and C. CampJaell. From here on there was only one man in it-as far as first place was concerned. E. Lovatt opened up a gap on the road and won easily by about 300 yards. Second man in was R Garnham, followed by O. Fisher. The teams race, on the other hand, was very closely fought out, the issue being in doubt almost to the last place. When the places were worked out it was found that two teams, R. Garnham's and O. Fisher's, had tied for first place each having 31 points. The individual placings were:—Garnham 2, Reid 0. Patrick 8, and Watt 15; total 31 points Fisher 3, McNaught 5, Blanchfield 9. and Gillies 14; total 31 points. Lovatt's team was third with 36 points. Five colts went out for a short run with R. Bezar in charge. . The teams for next Saturday's provincial championships will be:—A. grade: Lovatt, Garnham, Fisher, Campbell, Lister, and-.McNaught.-B grade:
Wilson, Blanchfield, Reid, Patrick, Workman, and Meech. Emergencies: Gillies and Siinderland. ;
