I I A last-minute sprint enabled J. Murray to defeat W. Owens: for first'plac«» m. the Wellington Harrier Club's A grade championship, held at Miramar o:v Saturday, afternoon over a distance . of six miies and a quarter I The course followed was practically two laps of the Palmer. Cup course except that the trail went via Southampton and Chelsea Streets instead of via Miramar Avenue. The barriers were sent away by Mr. Thomas, and Urady, Owens, Murray, and Tnomas stepped out into the-lead'. ■ The pace was fast, and the leaders soon drew away from the other runners. The places, of the leaders changed often at this stage and at the finish of the first lap they were Owens, Murray (.15 yards behind), Brady, and Thomas (30 yards behind Owens). At the start of the second lap Murray moved up to Owens, and they ran step for step during the whole of the second lap. Brady and Thomas were also together, but Thomas drew away and rna'ntained a good lead of 70- yards.. However, he faded in the straight, and Brady' managed to pass him and so obtain I third place, with Thomas, 30 yards I behind, gaining fourth/ Murray and Owens had been struggling to obtain the lead; but they were so evenly matched that it was only a last-minute sprint by Murray that made him the winner,, with Owens five yards behind second. The places were:—J. Murray, 35min 24sec, 1; W. Owens, 35min 27 sec; 2; H. Brady (captain), 36min 57sec, 3; H. Thomas, 37niin 7sec, 4; L. Beere, 37min 43sec, 5; R. Wakelin, 38min 3sec 6. JThese will constitute the A' grade t«am at Master ton on Saturday. The B grade team will consist of H. Allen (captain), G. Larsen, L/. McAuley, J. Drawbridge H. Robinson, S. Ruben. Emergencies: N. Resnick, L. Moss. The sealed handicap was won easily by H. Thomas, who ran an outstanding race. Thomas has improved greatly through consistent training
