THEFT FROM STORE
MAORI BEFORE COURT
Pleading guilty to a charge of theft of articles valued at £3.19s Bd, the property of the WaiapU-Farmers' Cooperative Store, Cape': Runaway,! Tawhai Whenga, a labourer, aged 20, appeared before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Magistrate's; Court today.
Detective G. Hogan said that he interviewed the accused on July 20 and obtained a statement which he read. The accused admitted, riding over to the store on horseback, and breaking into the rear of the building. He became afraid later, and burned the clothing he had stolen, but kept an axe and some chewing gum.; His excuse was that he was "hard up" at the time. Detective-Sergeant L. B. Revell said that the accused was serving a sentence of eighteen months' imprisonment with' hard labouiv -
