IMMIGRATION

A PLANNED SYSTEM

SUGGESTION IN HOUSE

An inquiry into the possibilities of adopting a system of planned immigration for New Zealand was suggested by the Speaker of the House of Representatives (the Hon. W. E. Barnard) today in a question addressed to the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage), through Mr. E. J. Howard (Government, Christchurch South).

Mr. Barnard gave notice to ask whether it was intended at. an early date to initiate a systematic survey and inquiry with a view to ascertaining:— 1. Whether, in the interests of the Dominion from a social, economic, and also international standpoint, it is desirable to adopt a policy of planned immigration; and if so

2. From what British and North European countries a sufficient influx of physically and mentally fit and otherwise desirable new citizens could be obtained; and

3. What methods should be adopted, what machinery would be required, and what preparations necessary to enable the Dominion to absorb such new citizens without any intensification or increase of unemployment or other anti-socia^jresults. "The question of more adequate population of the Dominions may be raised at the forthcoming Imperial Conference, in which case carefullycompiled data on the subject in relation to New Zealand would obviously be required by the Prime Minister," said Mr. Barnard.
