FOREST GLOW IMPROVED

Forest Glow's more promising showing at his first acquaintance with the Riccarton fences yesterday was.in conformity with the recent Awapuni report that he had freshened up since the Wellington Meeting, and it gave some encouragement to those who believe he still has a jumper's chance in the Grand National.

On his Wanganui and Trentham efforts Forest G-ow looked no better than a second-rater.. But his form earlier in the winter,; particularly at the Great Northern Meeting, where he was beaten only by Billy Boy in the Great Northern Steeples and then won the Winter Steeples, somehow seemed to show that he is better than his recent performances suggested. Possibly he requires firmer ground, such as he had in the north, and the Riccarton going on the steeples course is usually fairly firm at National time. He may also have been slightly overtrained, an impression that received colour in his outward appearance prior to the Wellington Meeting, and in the month between the two meetings he could have been sufficiently freshened up to go a much-improved race in the National. He will have a new rider next week in W. J. McDowell, who has recently .won two hunt cups for the stable on Miss Pango.
