The development of the woollen manufacturing industry in Australia is regarded as definitely of the greatest importance to the economic development of the Cpmmonwealth.
In 1907 only 60,810 bales of greasy wool were used in Australian establishments. During the last statistical year a little over 300,000 bales was used, an increase of upwards of 240,000 bales in 28 years.
In 1928 the estimated output of cloth in the Commonwealth was 9,626,000 yards. In 1953 it had reached the total of 21,127,000 yards, to which must be added flannels, blankets, rugs, and knitted goods.
The consumption of Australian wools in Australia within 30 years had risen from 2 per cent, to 12 per cent, of the total production of greasy wo<fl. When it was remembered that Australia was practically a sub-tropical country, and half of it within the tropics, and only had a population of about seven million people, this consumption of wool could only be regarded as astounding. The consumption of greasy wool worked out at approximately 131b a I head per annum.
