DANGEROUS DRIVING
JOHNSONVILLE CASES
Two cases of dangerous driving at the northern approach to Johnsonville were dealt with by Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today. Samuel Levin was fined £2 and costs, and William Shilling was fined £3 and costs and,his licence was suspended for two months. Inspector J. E. Ainsworth prosecuted in both cases. Inspector Ainsworth said that at about 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, he was approaching , Johnsonville from the north and was just turning into the main Johnsonville road "when the defendant Levin passed him right on the corner, met, an .obstruction in the middle of the" road, and cvt1 in sharply right in front of his (the inspector's) car. Levin then pulled out again to pass other traffic. The speed limit through Johnsonville was 25 miles per hour and the defendant was travelling between 25 and 30 miles per hour, a speed that in the circumstances, was dangerous. The defendant admitted that he had taken a chance.
• Mr. W. G. Mellish, who appeared for the defendant, said that Levin had been very frank when stopped by Inspector Ainsworth. He had recently had a serious 6peration, and the surgical dressings which he still wore had become loose and he was in a hurry to get. to town. He did not know that the road was up, and regretted making the manoeuvre.
In the case against Shilling, Inspector Ainsworth said that the defendant passed two- other cars on the corner, narrowly avoided a collision with another vehicle approaching, just missed the obstruction in the road, causing another car to go off the road on to the metal, passed a motor-bus on a blind intersection at 30 to 35 miles per hour, and continued on at 40 miles ,per hour.
Mr. Mosley, in suspending the defendant's licence, said that the case appeared to be a fairly serious one
