A SMUGGLERS' "TANK"

Guards along the French frontier, north of Lille, were doubled recently in the hope of trapping the armoured lorry in which smugglers have been dashing across the frontier from Belgium with cargoes consisting mainly of tobacco. This "tank," which crashes through all barriers, first made its appearance in May, and in spite of the guards, it has now made another successful dash across the border. It came racing up to the frontier just before dawn, at a point known as La Maison dcs Pauvres While frontier guards fired revolver shots, which had no effect upon the armoured lorry, it tore through two barriers and a net work of barbed wire, and sped on. Examination of the wire~ showed that the lorry must be equipped with a special form of fender, which pushes all obstacles clear. Racing on, the lorry crashed its way through another barrier at Warmhoudt, while more Customs guards fired inclfeclually with their revolvers.
