MOUNT MESSENGER
REMAKING ROAD
ABOLISHING A BAD SECTION
(By Telegraph.)
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day.
The reconstruction of the bad section of the Wellington-Auckland mam highway near Mount Messenger has" been commenced by the Public Works Department, which has established two camps under canvas, to house eighty men. The work is of a substantial nature and should provide employment for a considerable number of men for some time.
The narrow, winding road that does duty as part of the highway for six miles between Uruti and Mount Messenger, but which is considered by drivers to lie the worst stretch of highway between Auckland and Wellington, will be replaced by a broad highway that, with the exception of a few curves, will be almost straight. A start has already been made with the formation at the Uruti end.
The length of time the work will take will depend on the weather, but it is probable that sections of the new formation, as completed, will be metalled and made available for traffic. It is understood that when the full section, is completed a start will be made to improve the main highway from Pukearuhe northward, entailing in at least one place a considerable deviation.
