A LION STORY

KILLED ONE WITH KNIFE

RANGER'S EXPERIENCE

The following lion story was vouched for by Mr. Justice Ostler at the New Zealand Club today, regarding a ranger at the Kruger National Game Park.

Ranger "VVolhuter, who had been a warden there for many years, was walking his horse along in the dark when he saw a flitting shadow turn and come towards him. It was a lion, which sprang on his horse, knocking him off. He never hit the ground, as he fell on another lion. His Great Dane dog chased the other lion but this one picked him up and carried him a fewhundred yards. His gun was gone, but he felt for his knife, and when he was put down ready for a little cat-and-mouse fun, he struck hard, finding the lion's heart. Thinking the other lion would be back, he hied himself into a low tree, only some 11 feet up. Luckily, just as the other lion was reaching up after him, his dog attracted its attention, and the "boys" coming within hearing with lights, his danger was over. He was a man of 63 today.. Round his room were the heads of 56 lions he had shot, only about half of those he had accounted for.
