"BOY GUNMAN"'
SHOOTS HIMSELF AFTER
DUEL
SYDNEY, January 5
A revolver duel between the police and a man suspected of having shot and critically wounded Constable John Terbutt, near the Central Railway Station on New Year's Day took place in a house in the suburb of Waterloo today. The suspect, James Penrose, aged 18, known to the police as the "boy gunman," realising that resistance was futile, shot himself dead through the temple. A police cordon was thrown round the house where Penrose was hiding. He was the leader of a gang of hooligans and had confided to his associates that he would not be taken alive. When detectives burst into the house Penrose opened tire. A detective also fired. Both missed. Then, before there could be any further exchange of shots, Penrose turned the gun on himself.
