STANDARD PETROL PRICES
(To the Editor.) Si r,-I was surprised to. read "Taxi months ago when the City Council Sto their aid and fixed the fares SS taxis may charge their patrons Was a certain councillor incorrect when he declared at a City Council meeting that the taxi business was insuch an uneconomic condition that owner-drivers were actually sleeping in their cabs overnight? Why then "Taxi Driver's" objection to petrol resellers putting their business on an economic basis? Will the correspondent disclose why it is that taxi drivers expect to be supplied with petrol cheaper than other consumers? It: is because certain resellers have tried to accede to the re-
quests of taxis for preferential treatment and have attempted to conduct their business on a two-price structure that has time and again caused disruption in the petrol reselling trade and has resulted finally in our requests for a fixed margin of profit. Resellers do not intend to increase the present price of petrol. If "Taxi Driver" is concerned about the present price of petrol I want to assure him, and your readers also, that it is not the resellers nor is it the oil companies who are responsible. Were it not for the present tax petrol could be retailed at less than Is per gallon. Surely, Sir, the present tax on petrol must be bringing into effect the law of diminishing returns. Melhinks a reduction in the tax would make for increased revenue.— l am, etr WM. M. KING.
