STRATFORD MEETING

THE CUP TO DAVISTOCK

LADY ZINNIA PAYS WELL

(By Telegraph.) (Special to the "Evening Post.")

STRATFORD, January 5.

The consistent performer The Sandwich Man scored in good style in the Cardiff Maiden Stakes on the concluding day of-the Stratford Racing Club's' Meeting yesterday. Fast Acre was soon in front from The Sandwich Man, Golden Rill, and Kentucky Song. This was still the order into the straight but at the distance The Sandwich Man tackled Fast Acre and soon had his measure. Running on strongly he held of! Kentucky Song, to win by a length. Kentucky Song and Golden Rill finished solidly but had no chance with the winner. Lady Eka would have been placed but for running about in the straight. Fast Acre faded out badly. A solid sustained run from the bacic in the straight enabled Friesland to win the Ngaere Handicap in good Style. Lucidus made the pace from Invoice, Courtega, and Princess Star into the straight and looked like winning at the distance, but Friesland came fast on the outside and gathering him in 100 yards from the post won by three parts of a length. Refresher was unlucky in the running but fmishea solidly into third place. Banty mads up a good deal of ground into fourth place, after being last early. Invoice stopped badly in the straight. Friesland won too well for any excuses for the others. ~ , The Tariki Hack Handicap provided a splendid finish. Lady Zinnia made the pace and led into the straight from Sporting Song, Tuaheahe, and Alcides. The leader collapsed at the distance and half-way up the straight Sporting Song, Tuaheahe, and Alcides were all in line, with Tutor challenging on the rails. Tuaheahe was xhe firjst to weaken and Alcides hit the front, buy Tutor challenged him and in a great set-to Tutor won by a head, with Sporting Song a length away ■ third. Tuaheahe was fourth and Ingenuity fifth. Tutor's win was well deserved., as he had raced consistently in the circuit. ' ' SURPRISE WIN IN THE CUP. The Stratford Cup saw a surprise when Davistock turned up at figures on both machines. Silk Sox was rushed to the front from the start and led into the back from Lady Kyra, Davistock. Chief Marionette, Knock Out and Tout le Monde. At the far bend DavistocK had run into second place and into the straight Silx Sox still held command from Davistock, Lady Kyra, and Tout le Monde. Davistock collared Silk Sox at the distance and then held oft Tout le Mondo to win by half a length. Silk box was a good third, with a fast finish, and Aussie Ra was fourth. Then came Carfex. Aga Khan, Alchemic, and Lady KyraDavistock won well but Tout Je Monde was responsible for a fine effort and Aussie Ra was unlucky. The favourite, Knockout, was nicely placed for six furlongs, but then dropped nglu out to finish last. THE OTHER EVENTS. Making his first appearance for near-, iy twelve months March Alone wou the Makuri Hurdles in good style. Maunga King and Danzoff made the pace and the former was the first over the last fence, from Ruaform and March Alone. March Alone held oil Ruaform to win by a neck. Kuaform would have won but for a bad jump at the last fence. Maunga King was a good third, with Kaola, who made a bad jump at the seven furlongs, losing six or seven lengths. Sir Tommy and Mangukaha' were the early leaders in the Kaponga Hack Handicap from Chikara, Tooley Street, and Te Hai, and this was the order into the straight where Tooley Street ran through to the front and, holding oft a late run by Seamond, won by a neck. Red Sand, who was twice disappointed in the straight, finished strongly into third place. She was most unlucky, as also, was Seamond, who lost three or four lengths at the start. The Ark carried the tapes for 100 yards' and was never in a winning position. Sir Tommy Mangukaha, and Chikara all faded in the straight. -A hot favourite in Notium lost his chance at the barrier in the Electric Juvenile Handicap, having to give Harriarin six lengths' start. After going less- than a furlong he made up his ground, but his effort and weight' proved too much. Hamarin jumped out well and was never further back than second. He ran to the front at the distance to. score nicely. Gay Talkie finished solidly to get second. Galtee More showed a nice turn of pace to lead into the straight. The County Hack Handicap provided a boil-over .when the little-fancied Lady Zinnia, having her second start of the day, came' from the back to win, uaying over a score on the straightout machine. Winlona and Eara were the early leaders, from'Wahini Nui, but were joined.by Windsoreen at the half-mile, and the trio led into the straight from Wahini Nui. Silver Jest, an* 1 Dombey. Silver Jest ran to the front at the distance and looked a winner until Lady Zinnia came fast to win by half a length. Dombey was close up third and Winlona was fourth; then came Eara and Chikara. Contract ran badly. The weather was fine and there wes a large attendance. The totalisator figures were £18,081 10s, compared with £14,270 last year. The total for the meeting was £35,673 10s, compared with £S=-,fi4G 10s last year, an increase of £7027. RESULTS IN DETAIL.
