WOMEN'S CRICKET

MATCHES AT THE BASIN

WELLINGTON V. NELSON

There was much brightness about the cricket played at the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon. It was an occasion for the Wellington Ladies' Cricket Association to present selected players from its growing ranks, and the opportunity was used to the full. Both Wanganui and Nelson had been invited to take part, but Wanganui was unable to accept. Nelson's representatives, however, played their part in making the afternoon both interesting and entertaining. The interest of a large gallery was keen, and to many of those present the cricketing ability of the girls was a surprise. Incidents in play were watched very closely, and some of the decisions did not meet witn general approval, one in particular accounting for a demonstration against one of the umpires and a special show of .appreciation for the visiting young lady who was regarded as being unfortunate to be given out "stumped.

Wellington's representatives, as reported in "The Post" on Saturday, batted first against Nelson. There, was a slump after the excellent beginning made for the local side by Misses Holmes and Hatcher, wickets falling cheaply. It came as a surprise to find Miss Ell last on the batting list, but this position did not deprive her of the opportunity of making runs, and she and Miss N. Sheridan, who had been batting well, established a record last-wicket partnership, the score being taken from 134 to 226. Both players did splendidly, though Miss Ell, when 22 was fortunate in surviving an appeal for "run out." Misses Johnston, . Gardiner, and Field each took two wickets for the visitors, whosa bowling was quite good, though not supported to the full in.the field. Nelson did not fare well against the more experienced Wellington side when it came to their turn to bat.. In the first innings the visitors- made only, 42 runs and, following on, they had made 72 for nine wickets when, stumps wer.2 drawn. Misses • Stenberg- and Sheridan recorded excellent bowling figures, and there were others who' also showed good bowling ability. - - Wellington won by 184 runs on tft3 first innings.
