REDUCED FARES

QUEEN MARY TARIFF

CUNARD LINE'S ACTION

LONDON, January 1

Following an announcement that the minimum first-class fares for the Queen Mary have been fixed lower than those for the Normandie, Bremen, and Europa, the Cunard-White Star Line has given notice of withdrawal from the North Atlantic passenger conference which fixes fares. Interests opposing the reduction argued that a ship of such size and speed should not be placed on a lower fare than "cabin" class rating. It is understood that* the committee proposed that fares for the Queen Mary should be half-way between those for the Normandie and the United States liner Manhattan, but the suggestion was not acceptable to the CunardWhite Star Line and led to the notic* of withdrawal.
