MALLARD'S BOWLING

MATCH AT CHRISTCHURCH

(By telegraph— L Jress Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, January 1. The Wellington Mercantile Cricket League representatives made .an auspicious start in the annual game with the Christchurch Suburban Association today, and finished up 118 runs ahead on the first innings. Christchurch was sent in to bat a second time, and at stumps had scored two runs without loss. Play will continue tomorrow. Features of a game which was played on a perfect wicket and under ideal weather conditions were the fine batting of Aldridge and McKenzie, who saved an awkward position for Wellington by putting on a partnership which carried the score from 80 to 149 for the sixth wicket; the , first-class ground fielding of the visitors; and the brilliant bowling of Crook and Mallard, especially the latter, who was credited with being the most promising slow bowler seen in Christchurch since the days of Merritt.
