MERCANTILE LEAGUE
CHRISTCHURCH BRIGHTER
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
Though yesterday's play, in which they scored only 116 runs in reply to their opponents' 234, left the Christchurch Suburban representatives in a hopeless position against the Wellington Mercantile League side in their match at Hagley Park the Christchurch batsmen were in better form today, when they continued after having to follow on.
The batsmen were careful this morning against a fair attack and by the luncheon adjournment had made 102 for the loss of two wickets. Gordon (32) and Cullen (34 not out) were steady and showed some useful scoring strokes and it looked -as though their stand would avert'the possibility of an innings defeat. Scores: — WELLINGTON. First innings 234 CANTERBURY. First innings 116 Second Innings. D. Stokes, c Melville, b Crook .... 8 L. Gordon, c de Clifford, b Swain 32 G. Cullen, not out 34 T. Waine, not out 11 Extras 17 Total for two wickets 102
