In the Plunket Shield match Canterbury's opening batsmen, Kerr and Bellamy, despite good conditions, were restrained to the attack of Matheson and Cowie, the fast trundlers. Kerr early had an escape in the slips, Townsend failing to hold a last low catch off Cowie. The first 35 minutes produced only ]8 runs. The attack was then varied, Townsend and Postles going on. Two boundaries came off the coach's third over, Bellamy driving him to the fence, and Kerr turning another nicely. At this stage Bellamy had scored 19 to his partner's 14. Matheson and Cowie then resumed the attack at the other ends from which they had opened. Kerr was now playing confidently and his partner also appeared set. The total for an hour's play was 44.
After Matheson had a second turn at the bowling crease Vivian look the ball and the field opened out for the first lime. Neither batsman look risks with Vivian, who occasionally had Bellamy puzzled.
After 100 minutes^ batting Bellamy stepped out to smother Vi/ian and returned the bowler a catch. 73—1— 31.
Kerr and Hadlee were together till lunch, when the total was 81-.
