ALL IN DIFFICULTIES
111 SUA PS TO OARSMEN
FOUR BOATS FOUNDER
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day
Four of the five four-oar shells in the youths' fours open event at the New Plymouth Rowing Club's regatta yesterday foundered in choppy water outside the harbour and the fifth reached the shore half-full of water. Thanks to the prompt assistance of launches the twenty oarsmen thrown into the water, in which a twelve-foot shark was reported to be cruising, reached land safely and with little damage to their boats.
The rescue was difficult as the launches could not come too close for fear of smashing the racing shells. However, the boats were all secured and towed in. It was found that the Clifton Club's boat had a hole in the bottom, probably caused by an oar or a boat that was being towed with it.
Two of ihe racing oars were lost. The men were cold after their fairly long stay in the water.
