PORTUGUESE EMBASSY

BEAUTIFUL LONDON HOME

The. Portuguese Ambassador and Madame Ulrich are now installed in a most beautifully appointed and furbished home in London. It has taken •many months for the alterations, decojrations, and furnishings to be carried [out, but at last everything is finished, states a writer in the London "Daily Telegraph." ; Among the first things that strike ja visitor on entering are the wroughtJiron gates in the inner hall. The stair;case has walls resembling Sienna jmarble, and leopard skins are laid on .every, tread of / the stairs, with ;wrought-iron bannisters, which in conjunction with the handrails are painted in flame and green.

MADONNA BLUE DINING-ROOM.

: The drawing-room, shows'the Oriental influence which is characteristic of Portuguese domestic interiors. Pink marbled walls have curtains of green velvet to frame the windows, and panels of v embroidery in gold and silver are used very decoratively. Objets dart abound; .one of:the most beautiful is a cabinet of Chinese ebony encrusted with cornelian, jade, and rock crystal. It is cleverly flood-lit from the base, and thus illuminates the collection of carved ivories and jade .which are within.

_The dining-room has a ceiling of Madonna blue with silver moulding dividing it into big squares. A lighter tone of blue is used to give a marble effect to the walls. Big coffers are in bright blue enamel encrusted with :silver motifs. From' blue vases the ;modem flood-lighting sheds its rays ; upwards. Wrougtit-iron consoles: have tops of, deep glass, which are reflected on to the mirrored wall above I which reaches to the ceiling." ; Doors and window frames are in [bright blue enamel; panels on the 'walls'of .wonderful embroidery are carried out in real silver.
